Muon Research Laboratory Profile
The Nuclear Technology Innovation and Industrialization Laboratory of Lanzhou University, building upon the Rare Isotope Frontier Science Center and the National Nuclear Industry Research Institute of Lanzhou University, is dedicated to developing interdisciplinary and distinctive nuclear technologies while facilitating the transformation of research achievements. The laboratory's primary research areas encompass natural muon imaging technology, nuclear logging, radiation protection, nuclear medicine, compact controllable neutron tube technology, and more. It engages in both theoretical research and engineering studies on the industrialization of nuclear technologies, truly translating laboratory findings into solutions for industry needs—thereby driving industrial progress, benefiting society, and generating significant economic value.

The team is China's sole developer of mature, mass-producible cosmic-ray muon imaging systems with complete forward/inverse algorithms, achieving global competitiveness. Pioneering the nation's first mass-producible plastic scintillator imagers (LUMIS and CORMIS), these systems have enabled deep internal imaging of large structures, with successful applications in Xi'an infrastructure inspection and Zaozigou gold mine exploration. Current R&D focuses on low-cost borehole-type 3D muon imaging. Over five years, the team has secured 10 provincial/ministerial projects, obtained 7 patents, earned 9 awards, and published 60+ high-impact papers.
